The Ahupua’a Food Systems Tour explores the traditional Hawaiian land management system known as the ahupua’a. This 3.5-hour tour in Waipā guides you through the history and significance of the ahupua’a, which extends from the mountains to the sea.
Participants will visit various ecosystems including gardens, lo’i kalo (taro patches), orchards, streams, and fishponds. The tour highlights the Hawaiian values that have guided Waipā Foundation’s work over 30 years to transform the valley and community sustainably.
The tour involves walking and riding to multiple learning sites within the ahupua’a. Guests will sample foods related to the day’s topic and enjoy a lunch featuring ingredients sourced from Waipā. There is an opportunity to contribute to food sustainability by participating in light planting or harvesting with provided gloves and tools.
Wear closed-toed, preferably waterproof shoes as some terrain is uneven and wet. The tour operates rain or shine, with umbrellas provided. Prepare for occasional wet conditions due to Hanalei’s frequent rain.
